Since, they did not have the luxury of processed foods, the first century Palestinians relied on the woman to create most of the food. The woman would grind grains, prepare cheeses, milk cows, and bake bread for the family's consumption. Fish and chicken was their main source of protein, red meats such as lamb and beef were only eaten on special occasions. As for pork, the Jewish religion disallows the consumption of this meat so eating it was unheard of. Food was mostly cooked or stewed in large pots with various spices. Other foods such as dried fish, bakery items, fruits, vegetables, and olives were available for purchase at the local city marketplace.

Feast of Passover and Unleavened Bread- The most major celebration of the Jewish faith. This celebration commemorates the Exodus from the slavery in Egypt in 1300 BCE. The celebration consisted of slaughtering a perfect lamb followed by eating it and sprinkling of the lamb’s blood on each doorpost. The Feast of Unleavened Bread is also closely intertwined around the topic of the Exodus which is celebrated by a seven day feast of Unleavened Bread.
Feast of Weeks or Pentecost- This festival was situated 50 days after the Passover, and was a wheat harvest festival, later this festival would become the remembrance of the gift of the Torah on Mount Sinai.

Weekly Sabbath- The act of rest on the seventh day was first introduced in the Ten Commandments given to Moses. The idea of the day of rest originates from the Creation Story where God rested from his work after the 6 days of creation.
