The main religion through first century Palestine was Judaism, it being an ancient religion of the Israelites. What made Judaism different, is that it was monotheistic, they only believed there was one god, as supposed to the many other ancient religions revolving around many multiple gods and goddesses. The Torah, the holy scripture of the Jewish faith, included all of the Jewish peoples’ laws and divine teachings. The Jews also believed in the Sabbath, a day of rest and prayer.
Similar to Christianity today, Judaism had many various religious sects under the Jewish umbrella. The most common being the Pharisees, Essenes, Zealots, Followers of Jesus, and Sadducees.

Pharisees - This group believed in the close following of the Torah, the Prophets, and the writings. They were very enthusiastic about their faith and were always trying to make converts. The Pharisees were very obedient to the Sabbath, and other traditional Jewish rituals. They did believe in the resurrection, the Messiah, and rewards/punishments after death. The Pharisees’ practices and beliefs were the most alike to Jesus’ beliefs.
Zealots- The Zealots, one of the more revolutionary groups, they were a sect who strongly opposed the foreign rule of the Roman Empire. The Zealots believed that no foreign power had the right to oppose taxes since they received the Holy Land from God. This group was responsible for the ideals and organization that sparked the Great Revolt.

Essenes - The Essenes were a small more radical sect, who believed in a communal lifestyle. A group of Essenes who lived in Quran created the now famous “Dead Sea Scrolls”. It is also noted that this sect was comprised of mostly priestly figures. This Jewish group, was an apocalyptic group, that believed that God would send two different Messiahs one being a kingly figure and the other a priestly figure.
Followers of Jesus of Nazareth- This group started as a select number of Jews, and later turned into a group of both Gentiles and Jews. Jesus had many disciples, and a few apostles that he sent out to spread the his teachings. When Jesus died, a community of believers formed and spread their message to others nations. The Jesus Followers, went off to create what is now Christianity.

The Roman Empire was determined to practice syncretism, a system that allowed and accepted all religious beliefs and traditions. This system did not last long, later a Roman leader would create tension with the Jewish people regarding their religion. Also most first century Jewish sects, thought that the Messiah was due to arrive to free the chosen people of foreign rule. They thought that the Messiah would be a military and political leader.
